Beware of “disaster fraud”
The Administration on Community Living, U.S. Dep’t of Health and Human Services, has just released this reminder about “disaster fraud”.
People are coming together to help survivors of Hurricane Harvey in many ways. This support shows the positive side of people helping other people. Our networks are working hard to take care of each other. Americans are supporting those who are in need – they are doing so selflessly and with good intentions. First responders, the military, and regular citizens are working tirelessly to help our aging and disability communities with their needs. Unfortunately, there will be others who will try to take advantage during these trying times. Be on alert for phony requests for post-disaster donations and identity theft. Be alert and watch out for email phishing scams. DHS has advice for people who would like to donate funds to help the people in Texas. Some other resources available include:
