Deadline Looms for Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare beneficiaries are being encouraged to review their respective health plans as the deadline for open enrollment deadline approaches.  Dec. 6 marks the deadline for consumers to enroll in a traditional Medicare Advantage or Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. During the open enrollment period individuals can change their Medicare health plans and drug coverage for the following year to suit their needs.  Consumers should ensure that they can manage the cost of their premiums, the deductibles and co-payments.    Those who are taking medications should review their current plan’s drug listings by researching online and calling the respective customer service department to ensure that their prescriptions are still being covered.  Medicare recipients who do not wish to change their current coverage do not need to re-enroll in order to keep their current coverage.

Seniors who are eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare can enroll in Dual Eligibility Special Needs Plans. These plans are open to individuals over the age of 65 who meet income and poverty requirements and those under age 65 who are permanently disabled. Consumers can enroll in these plans at any time throughout the year.
